Biography

Nathan's whole family loves food, and that is one of the main reasons he became a chef in the first place: when he was a child, they grew their own vegetables and spent a large proportion of their time hunting, fishing, eating out and cooking at home.

The need to keep learning and adjusting to hone all of these skills has kept the chef hooked to the hospitality industry.

Nathan joined The Barn at Moor Hall in 2019, following sous-chef roles at multiple Michelin-starred restaurants around the world, including Kitchen W8, Geranium, Kadeau, Oaxen Krog and Le Champignon Sauvage

Nathan was in final six at the Roux Scholarship 2021, after rounds of regional heats and defeating competitors from all over the country.

The barn at moor hall

Moor Hall is a gentry house of mid-sixteenth century origin, and one of the most important listed buildings in the UK.

In 2015, the site was acquired by Andy & Tracey Bell and has since undergone a multi-million pound renovation.

The Barn features rustic brickwork and a characterful setting with an open kitchen, offering views of Moor Hall and the Lake.

In 2017, chef patron at two Michelin-starred Moor Hall Restaurant with Rooms Mark Birchall converted the adjacent building as a contemporary casual dining experience called The Barn on the same grounds as the flagship restaurant.

In February 2022, The Barn at Moor Hall was awarded a coveted star in the Michelin Guide for Great Britain and Ireland 2022.

Food

The menu at The Barn showcases the best of seasonal produce alongside a wide range of wines and beverages.

Most of the produce used across both of the restaurants at Moor Hall is grown within the property's five-acre grounds. Mostly everything else is sourced from local British suppliers.

Nathan's favourite dish on the menu is his Herdwick lamb dish, finished with a homemade elderflower vinegar sauce, wild capers and foraged garlic.

Customers have called the restaurant and the food 'superb from beginning to end', 'outstanding', 'exceptional', 'fabulous', 'excellent' and 'superior', while The Michelin Guide has described the cooking as 'modern and imaginative' with an 'appealing à la carte menu that offers dishes which are British at heart, with understated elegance and well-judged combinations of delicious flavours.'
