Chef Career Advice

Tony Cameron, lecturer in Culinary Arts, London's Westminster Kingsway College London, offers aspiring industry professionals his careers advice and industry tips from his many years of experience of the industry alongside his knowledge of catering students and the colleges close links with industry.

I think the advice I would give any young person leaving college today and entering the industry would be to ask questions and think about those questions they are going to ask - also try and work abroad for a little while.

What can a young chef expect from our industry today? Well, I think hard work and they'll have to be committed but they can also expect reward and nowadays there's a lot more reward to be gained once you get up the ladder.

When someone applies to the college I'm looking for passion and I'm looking for someone who has the desire to succeed. They should also love their food and love talking about it plus they should be a team player. I often look for someone who likes a bit of team sport because it gets them into the team way of thinking.

People can expect from students who have attended Westminster Kingsway College, someone who knows what they are doing, who has been taught well by some very good people as we have some very good lecturers here. Also, they can expect someone who has the desire to succeed and do well.
